Catholics for Choice Applauds Biden’s Abortion Executive Order, Demands Bolder Action
WASHINGTON — Catholics for Choice, which uplifts and amplifies the voices of the majority of Catholics who believe in reproductive freedom, released the following statement from President Jamie L. Manson about the executive order on abortion care signed by President Biden today:
“Catholics for Choice applauds President Biden for today’s executive order safeguarding access to medication abortion and emergency contraception, setting up an interagency task force, and promoting the safety of abortion patients and providers. President Biden’s executive order is a good and necessary step – and we are grateful – but it’s just that: a first step.
“The Supreme Court’s outrageous decision to rescind the constitutional right to abortion dramatically escalated an ongoing reproductive healthcare crisis in this country and demands a far bolder, more comprehensive response. While much of this requires action from Congress, the President has a number of additional tools at his disposal, including authorizing the use of federal property and resources to provide abortion services and overhauling agency regulations to maximize access to care, protect patients from discrimination, and preempt contradictory state laws.
“The President has an opportunity here: 68% of his fellow pro-choice Catholics did not want to see Roe v. Wade overturned. The majority of Americans – both secular and religious – did not want to see Roe v. Wade overturned. Our pro-choice Catholic president is uniquely positioned to push back against the religious overreach of the Catholic hierarchy into secular government and assert, once and for all, that we are a nation that values true religious freedom.
“The urgency of this moment demands all pro-choice people of faith – including our President – truly do everything we can to protect and expand abortion rights to the full extent of our power, as quickly and expeditiously as possible.”
