Catholics for Choice Responds to Today’s Supreme Court Decision
WASHINGTON — Catholics for Choice, which uplifts and amplifies the voices of the majority of Catholics who believe in reproductive freedom, released the following statement from President Jamie L. Manson, M.Div., in response to today’s decision in FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine:
“The Supreme Court’s decision that it will not accept the politically motivated case in FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine is a welcome reprieve from a continued attack on our rights in the courts.
“Attempts to ban medication abortion like mifepristone expose what the anti-abortion lobby has been after all along — banning abortion in all cases. At Catholics for Choice, we see these political challenges for what they truly are: an attempt to enshrine the theological concept of when life begins into law. We are relieved that today, the Supreme Court rejected this blatant religious overreach.”
“For today, we are relieved that doctors, not church doctrine, will continue to guide the management of the abortion medication mifepristone. But we know this feeling, while welcome, will be short-lived because bad-faith religious actors will not give up on their attacks on bodily autonomy. Catholics for Choice won’t give up either — and we’ll continue to lift up the voices of the pro-choice Catholic majority now, more than ever.”
