Catholics for Choice Reacts to Second Women’s Health Protection Act Vote
Jamie Manson: “Congress must continue the drumbeat and doggedly pursue legislation that will ensure that all people, everywhere, can access abortion care.”
WASHINGTON – In response to today’s Senate vote on the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA, S 4132), the second this year and the first since the leak of the draft Supreme Court decision rolling back the federal constitutional right to abortion, Catholics for Choice President Jamie L. Manson, M.Div. released the following statement:
“Catholics for Choice applauds the Senate for taking a second vote on the Women’s Health Protection Act in the wake of the Supreme Court’s draft decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization that would explicitly overturn Roe v. Wade.
“Just last week, five vehemently anti-choice Catholic justices showed the world just how callous they could be about the health and wellbeing of millions of people. We are grateful that Senator Schumer and 48 other senators took the immediate action that is required in this dire moment.
“We extend our gratitude to pro-choice Catholic senators like Senator Murray, Senator Casey, Senator Padilla, Senator Cortez-Masto and others for their continued support of abortion rights and access for all Americans. By voting for WHPA, they espouse our shared values of dignity, compassion, justice, and respect – all of which compel us to advocate for reproductive health, rights, and justice for everyone.
“The Supreme Court has made it clear that the days of judicial precedent are numbered. Therefore, Congress must continue the drumbeat and doggedly pursue legislation that will ensure that all people, everywhere, can access abortion care. It is time for the pro-choice Catholic majority to speak out and urge Congress to do the right thing. Senators must end the filibuster and pass WHPA to protect abortion access nationwide.
“Will Congress do what we elected them to do – leave no stone unturned until access to abortion is a reality for everyone? We know our champions, movement partners, and abortion providers will.”
Catholics for Choice shapes and advances sexual and reproductive ethics that are based on justice, reflect a commitment to a person’s well-being and respect, and affirm the capacity of all people to make moral decisions about their lives.
