Catholics for Choice Responds to Today’s Supreme Court Decision in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo and Relentless v. Department of Commerce
WASHINGTON — Catholics for Choice, which uplifts and amplifies the voices of the majority of Catholics who believe in reproductive freedom, released the following statement from President Jamie L. Manson, M.Div., in response to today’s decisions about the Chevron deference:
“Today’s Supreme Court decision is nothing more than judicial overreach. Overturning the Chevron doctrine and throwing out 40 years of legal precedent has one goal: to give the Supreme Court even more power. Today’s decision in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo and Relentless Inc. v. Department of Commerce will weaken the power of the Executive Branch and make the Court even less accountable to the checks and balances that are essential to our democracy.
“A more powerful Supreme Court is dangerous. Why? Because the conservative justices on this Court are not following their own code of ethics that requires impartiality and fairness. Most conservatives on the bench were selected by right-wing Catholic Leonard Leo because of their anti-choice and anti-LGBTQ views, not to mention their overreaching, discriminatory interpretation of religious freedom.
“Because of today’s decision, life-tenured justices who have supported an insurrection and done so much to undermine democracy will have more power to change and eliminate laws and regulations on behalf of their wealthy benefactors’ agendas. We may not feel the effects immediately, but in the coming months and years, we will watch as the Court litigates away our rights to contraception, marriage equality, worker safety, environmental protection and more.
“Catholics for Choice will not turn away from countering the Catholic actors in our judicial system who operate in bad faith. We will be there every step of the way to call out the religious overreach and insist that not in our names will the Court take away our fundamental freedoms. While the Court just made our work even more difficult, it is as urgent as ever.”
