Catholics for Choice Statement on the 2024 Election

WASHINGTON — Catholics for Choice, which uplifts and amplifies the voices of the majority of Catholics who believe in reproductive freedom, issued the following statement from Christopher Wimbush, Interim President, on today’s news that Donald Trump and JD Vance have won the 2024 presidential election:

“Catholics for Choice is a 501(c)(3) and therefore cannot endorse candidates, but we feel compelled to speak out after the election of Donald Trump and JD Vance. We know that many people are likely feeling devastated and fearful about this news and what is to come. We share that unease and anger.

“For our 50-year history, Catholics for Choice has taken a hard look at religious overreach and the legacy of Christian nationalism that Catholic men, including the Catholic bishops, have promulgated. They are all too often the architects of attacks on abortion rights, LGBTQIA+ inclusion, and gender equality. We fear that with the results of this election, those right-wing forces will become more emboldened to advance their anti-woman, anti-LGBTQIA+ agenda. Catholics for Choice will be here for those who will join us in pushing back against this distortion of our faith.

“There is a dichotomy in this election that Catholics played a part in. Early exit polls show that Catholics made up a quarter of the voting population and that Catholic voters supported Trump over Harris by a double-digit margin. At the same time, the majority of voters in at least 8 of 10 states — Colorado, New York, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, Arizona, and even Florida — supported measures that would protect and expand abortion rights. As we learn more about the election results and what motivated voters, the fact remains that pro-choice Catholics are the majority, regardless of the bishops’ views on the matter.

“I am sure that pro-choice Catholics and our entire nation will have more to reflect on and more to say in the coming days. For now, one thing is clear: Catholics for Choice’s vital, nonpartisan initiatives against Christian nationalism are truly indispensable as we face this current landscape together.”
