Catholics for Choice Statement on USCCB’s Attack on IVF
WASHINGTON — Catholics for Choice, which serves the pro-choice Catholic majority, released the following statement from Maddy Niziolek, Senior Development Associate, in response to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ claims that IVF “destroys human life”:
“Yesterday the USCCB said that IVF ends countless human lives and treats persons like property. Growing up, my twin brother and I always knew that we were the proud result of IVF when my parents had difficulty conceiving. My parents raised us knowing this was a part of God’s plan, and we were God’s gift. Every day, I’m grateful that my parents followed their conscience. I carry on this work so that other Catholics know they are not alone when deciding if, when, and how to grow their families — whether that involves choosing IVF, abortion, contraception, or other reproductive medicine. As a staff member at Catholics for Choice and a queer Catholic, I know my parents are right: IVF is one of God’s many gifts. At Catholics for choice, we affirm all individuals’ abilities to make conscience-based decisions about their bodies, lives, and futures.”
Christopher Wimbush, Interim President, said the following:
“Once again, the bishops have made it clear that they are out of touch with Catholics trying to grow their families. Access to healthcare like IVF is particularly essential for LGBTQIA+ people as they determine their reproductive futures. Catholics for Choice is in solidarity with all people using IVF to bring new life into the world.”
