“I know the Vatican’s views on abortion and IVF. My wife and I did not come to the decision lightly. We don’t need any more shaming.”

By Scott N.

I am a 59-year-old man who was raised Catholic. Although I left the church after confirmation, I returned to the church this summer. Today, a priest spoke out against in vitro fertilization in his sermon, and I was heartbroken. When I spoke to the priest after Mass today, he told me that though our child (now 18) is blessed, I needed to repent. He said that IVF is a commodity, and my wife and I had other options at the time. While adoption was on the table, IVF worked for us. It was a long, emotional process. I will continue my rekindled love for God and the teachings of Jesus, but I am still saddened. I pray for the Catholic church. It took seven years of sobriety and hard work to return with an open, loving heart. I know the Vatican’s views on abortion and IVF. My wife and I did not come to the decision lightly. We don’t need any more shaming. I thank you for being present. I hope to find a Catholic church that is a bit more liberal while I pray to God to help guide me.
