“It’s been over 50 years. I have not told the whole story of my abortion to anyone, ever. I deserve to heal. It is sad that I cannot go to my faith to experience that healing.”

By Bonnie A.

I am a pro-choice Catholic because I believe strongly in social justice and equality. I share this quote in solidarity with a friend from Massachusetts: “It’s been over 50 years. I have not told the whole story of my abortion to anyone, ever. I deserve to heal. It is sad that I cannot go to my faith to experience that healing. It is my divine choice to decide if I would love and nurture a child that was the result of, what I understand now, was date rape. There were no resources available to me as a 17-year-old and no consequences for the father. It was my Catholic aunt who helped me find a safe, legal medical abortion. I had to raise the money, fly to another state, and endure physical discomfort. I was desperate, depressed, suicidal, and scared. I should not have had to go through it all alone. I should not have had to go through any part of the process. I should have been able to have the abortion at my doctor’s office in my hometown, with my aunt holding my hand. To think that 50 years later, another girl like me is at risk of losing her right to make a choice! We cannot let that happen.”
